| Escrito al dorso en una hoja mecanografiada en tinta negra: "BRITAIN´S YOUNG ARTIST IN WAR. Many of Britain´s young artist have of course joined the fighting services; others have joined one or other of the civil defence organisations in order to obtain first hand knowledge of the subjects they propose to paint. Miss Anna Zinkeisen, the well - known British artist and stage designer, has undertaken a numer of paintings and drawnings for the Royal College of Surgeons, while in her spare time she is a member of a Voluntary Aid Detachment of the St. John Ambulance at St. Mary´s Hospital, London.
One night, during a heavy German raid, a serious case requiring an inmediate operation was brought to the First Aid Post to which she is attached. Owing to the failure of the electric light the operation had to be performed by candle - light, and Miss Zinkeisen decided to paint the dramatic scene on the spot. In this photograph nurses are seen admiring the picture in the operating theatre after its completion.
