| ENGLISH CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS. Christmas in England is the great festival of the year. To Englishmen it is the time of good fellowship and goodwill, and above all, it is essentially the feast of the child, for nowadays the festivities are centred round the children, with the adults joining in.
In England Christmas customs hace existed for centuries, and the origin of some of them is lost in the mists of centuries. One of the oldest is the use of mistletoe, the old Scandinavian plant of peace beneath which enemies met, and agreed to drop their differences.
This picture shows a modern children´s Christmas party in progress. Here, wearing their comic hats, the children are seen pulling the giant cracker, which contains presents for the guests. PASSED BY THE CENSOR AND ISSUED BY THE OVERSEAS DEPARTMENT OF THE BRITISH COUNCIL." | |
