Escrito al dorso: "THE SCOTTISH UNIVERSITIES. Three of the four Scottish Universities —St. Andrew´s, Glasgow and Aberdeen— date from the 15th century; the fourth, Edinburgh, was founded in 1582 by the Town Council under a Royal Charter granted by King James VI of Scotland. All four have always been Universities for the common people to a much greater extent than those in England. Above all, they have been teaching institutions, although research has not been neglected. The Medical School of the Edinburgh University is particulary well - known, and works in conjunctions with the Edinburg Royal Informay where choloroform was first used by Professor Simpson in 1847, and where many modern advances in medicine, surgery and obstetrics have been made. The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland —interest on a fund of 2,000,000 left by Andrew Carnegie, the Scotish millionaire— has greatly aided research. This picture shows St. Salvator´s Hall Residence in St. Andrew´s University. Issued by the British Council, Overseas Press Department. No reproduction fee payable outside the United Kingdom."
