Three of the four Scottish Universities —St. Andrew´s, Glasgow and Aberdeen— date from the 15th. century; tje fourth, Edinburgh, was founded in 1582 by Town Council under a Royal Charter granted by King James VI of Scotland. All four have always been Universities of the common people to a much greater extent than those of England. Above all, theey have been teaching institutions, although research has not been neglected. The Medical School of the Edinburgh University is particularly well-known, and works in conjunction with the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where choloroform was first used by Professor Simpson in 1847, and where many modern advances in medicine, surgery and onstetrics have been made. The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland - interest on a fund of 2,000,000 left by Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish millionaire has greatly aides research.
