| Escrito al dorso: "LONDON LIBRARY NOT BADLY DAMAGED. Members of the London Library —there are now 5,000, the highest number in the library´s history— will shortly have on opoortunity of seeing some of the valuable books salvaged from the premises which were damaged by bombs some months ago. The librarian, Mr. C.J. Purnell, intends to preserve, for example as a memento of what he describes ´the most exciting night of my life— a copy of George Adam Smith´s ´Modern Criticism and Preaching of the Old Testament´. It has a piece of explosive firmly embedded in its spine.
It is hoped that the library will be sufficiently set in order to allow its re-opening early in July. Members who do not object to a certain amount of dust can already wake use of the reading-room.
Happily, the main portion of the Library´s contents, which amount to about half a million books, is undamaged. No complete list of the destroyed volumes has yet been made, but already many of the missing books have been replaced. Among these are ´William Hickey´s Memoirs´, and the ´Life of Benjamin Jowett´.
This picture was taken a day or so after the London Library was damaged by bombs. It shows the Art Room, with American soldiers and civil volunteers helping yo rescue the books.
