| Escrito al dorso: "HARVEST FESTIVAL IN AN ENGLISH VILLAGE. A
centuries - old custom was observed at the Harvest Festival at
Hambleden village church when the choir proceeded yo the lych gate to
meet a number of local farmers, who arrived with their offerings of
sheaves of corn. The procession entered the church and the sheaves
were placed on the steps leading to the chancel. In olden days this corn
was given to the sexton as part of his wages, but now it is handed over
as part of the nation´s food store. Tradition stipulates that this
ceremony, if missed for one year, can never be repeated.
The Harves Festivals this year have had a new sincerity and meaning
for never before in the memory of man has Britain enjoyed such a
luxuriant harvest.
This picture shows Hambleden farmers entering the village church in
procession with their offering of corn. THIS PHOTOGRAPH HAS BEEN
PASSED BY THE CENSOR." | |
